Fitting is free
If you haven't got disc mounts on your frame or forks you can't fit them. The torsion bar that allowed you to mount disc brakes to your v-brake boss was discontinued in 2000.
You must have disc brake compatible hubs to be able to fit hope disc brakes to your bike. (otherwise there's nowhere to bolt the disc on) see our custom wheel building page for details.
Hope discs and calipers are available in loads of fittings. When you take into account all the disc sizes (about 5 disc sizes, 5 or 6 bolt, 3 patterns) , the 11 caliper fittings, the 3 brake types, etc you can understand why we don't always have everything in stock! However we do keep the most common brakes in. If we haven't the brake you require, Hope usually deliver within 4 working days.
Advantages of Disc Brakes
More power! This allows you to brake later, making you faster. It's also less tiring because you don't have to keep squeezing the lever so hard. This power is consistent, effectively regardless of temperature, rim condition, trail conditions right through the life of the brake.
Better performance in mud (than a v-brake). In fact mud seems to help!
Better mud clearance. So muddy grass catching around around your cables.
Pad wear is minimal. (Matt used the same pads on his Super 8 for nearly 2 years). One of our customers used to go through a set of rear v-brake once a week, through winter. He was riding in the abrasive grit stone of the Peak District. So at £10 per pair of pads he could have bought a complete disc brake within 3 months.
There's no pivots to wear.
The lifetime of the brake is infinite. We've been selling Hope brakes for about 9 years and during that time not a single customer has thrown away a disc brake of theirs because is had worn out in any way. People have upgraded to more powerful systems when they've been released for sale. They always either sell their old brakes on, or relegate them to an older bike.
We haven't had a single Hope customer change to another brand of brakes on their next bike. Everyone always sticks with Hope.
You can buckle your wheel and, provided it's not to bad, it won't affect your braking.
No cables to maintain! The hardest rider would only have to replace the oil in the system about once a year. This is easier than adjusting a v-brake.
Removing and replacing wheels is easier. You've don't have to disconnect/re-connect cables.
Disadvantages of Disc Brakes (because we're honest)
Initial Cost is high.
A lightweight, reliable disc brake is heavier than the equivalent v-brake.
You must not get oil on the disc or pads. This would write the pads off. The discs can be cleaned using isopropanol alcohol.
